The teacher behind The Chemistry Tutor™

Jake Byers is a Chemistry teacher with 23 years of teaching experience. He holds a First-Class Chemistry degree and a PGCE, and his professional background also includes school leadership and examiner experience with AQA.

He created The Chemistry Tutor™ to make Chemistry clearer, more manageable and better organised for students. The aim is to bring together clear explanations, structured learning, useful resources and more focused support in one place.

The website is designed so that students can choose the type of help that is most useful to them — whether that means free teaching, a supporting resource or tutoring.

Jake Byers, Chemistry teacher and creator of The Chemistry Tutor™

Why The Chemistry Tutor™ exists

Chemistry can feel difficult when explanations move too quickly, topics seem disconnected or it is not clear how knowledge should be applied.

The Chemistry Tutor™ was created to make those challenges easier to approach. The aim is not to remove the scientific detail or the challenge from Chemistry, but to explain ideas clearly, organise learning carefully and help students understand how the different parts fit together.

Free teaching sits at the heart of that approach. Resources and tutoring provide additional routes for students who want more structured practice or more focused support.

Clear, structured and student-centred

Jake’s teaching approach is built around three connected principles.

Clear explanations

Complex ideas are broken into manageable stages while preserving the scientific accuracy and detail students need.

Structured learning

Topics, calculations, practical skills and examination technique are connected so that students can build a more coherent understanding of Chemistry.

Student-centred support

Students develop understanding and confidence at different rates, so explanations, examples, practice and guidance should respond to what a student actually needs.

Experience that informs the teaching

Jake’s approach is informed by 23 years of Chemistry teaching, school leadership experience and examiner experience with AQA.

Those different perspectives reinforce the importance of accurate scientific understanding, clear communication and careful application of knowledge. They also shape the way The Chemistry Tutor™ tries to make difficult material more understandable without oversimplifying it.

The Chemistry Tutor™ is an independent education business and is not endorsed by or affiliated with AQA.

The person behind the teaching

Behind the lessons, resources and website is a real teacher who still enjoys finding better ways to explain Chemistry.

For Jake, good teaching is not simply about giving students more information. It is about choosing the right explanation, building ideas in a sensible order and helping students see connections that may not have been obvious before.

That principle runs through The Chemistry Tutor™: make the subject clearer, keep the science accurate and give students useful ways to move forward.

Choose the support that suits you
